AI costs will stack
AI costs are about to show up everywhere in your nonprofit budget.
Not as one big line item. As ongoing small ones.
- Your CRM will have an AI upgrade.
- Your fundraising platform will have an AI tier.
- Your email tool will add AI features.
- Microsoft Copilot will sit on top of your existing Microsoft bill.
- Staff may still need ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for daily work.
Each one may feel reasonable on its own.
Together, they become a new operating cost.
And the hard part is this:
Most of those costs will not replace anything.
They will stack.
You will still pay for the CRM.
The email platform.
The fundraising tool.
The event system.
The reporting work.
The staff time needed to make sense of it all.
AI may help. But it will not be free.
It will not stay separate.
And it will not automatically reduce complexity.
Before nonprofits approve every AI upgrade, there is a better question to ask:
What intelligence do we actually need?
Because the future cost of AI will not just be the subscriptions.
It will be the number of places your team has to pay, check, trust, and reconcile.
