Not bigger teams. Smarter ones.
Something is shifting in how small teams operate.
Perplexity, the AI-native search tool (I highly recommend this tool if you aren’t using it yet) just 5x’d revenue from $100M to $500M with only 34% more headcount. They plan to do it again next year with the same team.
The old rule was simple. You grow by hiring.
More customers = more support.
More products = more ops.
More complexity = more managers to manage the managers.
That rule is breaking.
The same shift is coming for nonprofits.
- Donor impact reports drafted in minutes.
- Grant proposals pulled together from live data.
- Campaign briefs that come together in an afternoon instead of bouncing through three departments.
Foundation teams can move faster, ship more, and steward better without adding headcount or layers. The point here isn’t speed though. It’s that the time saved goes back into the relationships that actually matter.
Not bigger teams. Smarter ones.
