Where does the intelligence live?
Six months ago, I wouldn’t have thought sovereign Canadian AI was even realistic.
We’re only a country of 40 million people, right?
For years, we’ve become accustomed to building on technology from U.S. giants like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple. I assumed AI would be no different. We’d all be using U.S.-based models, storing our data in U.S.-based cloud platforms, and building on their ecosystems.
Lately, though, I’ve been discovering something different.
Canadian companies are quietly building AI infrastructure, Canadian-hosted LLMs, and Canadian alternatives to familiar cloud software.
That surprised me. Then it intrigued the hell out of me. It’s changed the questions I’m asking.
Where does the intelligence live?
Who controls the infrastructure?
If I’m building AI for hospitals, universities, or nonprofits, are we actually at the point where sensitive data doesn’t have to leave Canada?
One of the companies that sent me down this rabbit hole is Augur. I’m still evaluating whether it’s the right fit for AI4Love, but discovering that a Canadian-hosted LLM is even an option completely changed how I think about AI infrastructure. A year ago, I wouldn’t have imagined Canada would have credible sovereign AI platforms to choose from. It made me realize that, for the first time, choosing an AI model might also mean choosing where the intelligence and the data live.
I don’t know the answer yet. But I’m pretty excited to find out.
Maybe, today, model capability still outweighs everything else.
Or maybe, over the next few years, trust, governance, and sovereignty become just as important as benchmark scores.
Either way, it’s a conversation I wasn’t expecting to be having in 2026.
Now I’m curious how many organizations are already thinking this way, or whether most are still focused on simply getting started with AI.
It feels like Canada is quietly building something worth paying attention to.
Are you starting to think about sovereign AI yet, or is it still too early to matter?
